This section of scripture speaks once again to the foolishness of trusting in riches and material wealth. Wealth that can be here today and gone tomorrow because of the fickleness of mankind. In addition, we have to also understand God is the author of blessings, God is also sovereign and in control and when He looks at us, He does so with eternity in mind. Those who have wealth tend to trust not in the Lord; but in their wealth which is only transitory. Moreover, wealth tends to create pride with those who trust in their riches. They tend to develop pride over what they have, rather than developing a love for the Lord who gave them their wealth. And this is the attitude God is speaking about here in these verses.
There is nothing wrong with wealth; however, when it begins to replace God in our lives, it can lead to ruin, it can bring about our own destruction. There is nothing wrong with wealth; however, when it keeps us from helping those in need, it can open us up to the discipline of God. In addition, wealth can separate us from the Lord as we set our hearts toward what we have, rather than on the creator who sustains us. We have to remember God did not bless us with wealth so we can spend more on ourselves. Rather, God blesses us with wealth so we can bless those around us who are in need and further the kingdom of God with the spread of the Gospel. Wealth is a blessing from God and it comes with a greater responsibility from God to do more for others. Wealth gives us the opportunity to be more effective for the kingdom of God, and because of that increased opportunity, we have a greater responsibility to act in the eyes of God.
