Daily Proverbs

Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water, but a man of understanding will draw it out.

Daily Bible Study
How do we grow in wisdom? Not man's wisdom based on self and desires of the flesh. And not wisdom based on a fallen world at enmity with God; but in the wisdom of God. How do we grow in true wisdom which leads to life and brings us a life lived more abundantly? We do so through the deep down study of God's word, once we have placed our faith in Christ Jesus our Lord and given our hearts to Him. Our faith in Jesus brings with it the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. And it's the Holy Spirit who illuminates our understanding of scripture in light of who Jesus is and what He has done for us. The Holy Spirit teaches us as we study God's word, bringing us true wisdom, which comes from God. And that's what these passages are speaking about. It's important to remember all scripture speaks of Jesus. From the Old Testament to the New Testament the Bible testifies of Christ as it unfolds God's plan of redemption.

Moreover, we must remember that the culmination of God's plan of redemption is to bring all of creation under the lordship of Jesus Christ to the glory of God the Father. This means without a relationship with God through Jesus, we have no way of truly understanding the Bible and no participation in the culmination of all of human history and the eternity to come. Without a relationship with God through Christ, we cannot fully understand God's plan of redemption as revealed to us in scripture. These passages also show us that a godly man has understanding that is rooted deep in God's word, the Bible. And through the intentional study of God's word he will draw out more wisdom, more guidance and therefore more joy in his life by following the Lord. In addition, a godly man places himself in fellowship with other men who study the Bible and pass down what they learn to the next generation. And if we look back we can see that God has raised up great men throughout history who have recorded their commentaries and lessons learned through the study of God's word. This is important for us to read as well, because the primary business of the church is to teach the word of God and preach the Gospel of Christ.
