Daily Proverbs

Better is the one who is slighted but has a servant, Than he who honors himself but lacks bread.

Daily Bible Study
Pretension and arrogance destroy all who practice them and they destroy completely those who embrace them. Yes boasting and false claims may seem to pay off initially in the short term. However, God's word is true and in the end, pretension and arrogance will destroy those who try to live by them, because they bring about the discipline and the wrath of God. Why? Because pretension and arrogance are part of mankind's rebellion against God, they stem from the desires of our sin nature for recognition and pride. This verse contrast, the average hard-working person who is not famous, someone we would in today's world call a "nobody" against the arrogant and the proud.

This proverb speaks about the average person who, with honesty and integrity provides for themselves and their family and lives in fear of the Lord. Which means they live with a deep down love, respect and awe of God. This is a person who walks with the Lord and receives God's blessings and in humility they serve the Lord and others out of their love for God. Someone we would say, "works an honest day's work." This is contrasted with the arrogant, self-promoter, someone who wants everyone to know who they are; but otherwise has nothing and is unable to support themselves. The Bible tells us the former is better than the latter, God is not going to bless those who seek their own glory. God will not bless those who build up their own ego through false claims and pride.
