God Hates Lying Lips, They Bring Wrath to the Liar – (Proverbs 12:22-23)

Daily Proverbs

Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, but those who deal truthfully are His delight. A prudent man conceals knowledge, but the heart of fools proclaims foolishness.

The word used here for abomination means nausea and to make a person sick with extreme anger. This verse gives us a pretty strong analogy of just how much God hates lying lips. Lying lips are full of hatred and deceit. Moreover, from the perspective of God's impending wrath and punishment, it is far better to be silent than to proceed with lying lips. In addition, these passages point out that the foolish think wrongly, because they believe others want to hear their foolishness. They think others will find interest in what they have to say, that their foolishness is some how clever and exciting. However, God reminds us again, it's better to be silent than to display foolishness to others. We have to remember that, God is interested in our hearts, not just our actions.

And when God looks at us, He looks at the true intentions of our hearts. And what these passages refer to is not just the person who is lying in what they say, but in their actions. Even when we do what appears to be a good deed from the outside, God is looking at the motive and desires behind that action. If we do something nice for someone, but we did it for dishonest gain, or to get ahead, to get favoritism in return, then that good deed is still considered lying and sin. This is because it was done with a dishonest motive. This is contrasted with the wise, who model humility and restraint. The wise who speak only what they know to be true, and only at appropriate times and in such a way as to build up, not to tear others down. The wise speak to edify and help others, not for self-gain or to destroy others.
