This proverb is stating the fifth commandment of the Ten Commandments another way. And it speaks about honoring parental authority. In ancient times the parents were the source of wealth as well as provided livelihood to younger men as they grew into manhood. And when the children grew into adulthood, they often took a piece of land and livestock from the family profits to start their own lives. So, to not honor your father and mother in such a culture would not only leave you destitute; but would also leave you as an outcast in society. Honoring your parents is an intimate part of the culture and therefore not to do so in this society was a cultural taboo. Moreover, honoring parents shows our love and honor of God, because it shows we care enough to follow His commandments. But more importantly in God's eyes, its right to honor your parents who gave you life.

Moreover, to do so understanding just like us they too are a product of the fallen world we live in. They too are sinners who can only be saved by grace alone through faith alone in Jesus. Therefore, like us they are sinners saved by grace, sinners who have the same fallen nature we have, and are open to the same sins that befall us as well. For us today, this passage is so vital because it speaks of the importance of having a close, godly family unit. A family that together worships the Lord and studies God's word, the Bible. This passage shows us the importance of creating a family where the parents model godly humility and love for their children, which in turn helps the family as a whole live in the fear of the Lord. Fear of the Lord means to have a deep down love, awe and profound respect for God, His word and His work in our lives. It also carries with it an understanding of the need for our submission to the guidance and work of the Holy Spirit in our day to day life.
