This passage while providing humor for us also brings up a spiritual truth about a condition which destroys the lives of many people, that is laziness. Lazy people will do anything and go to great lengths to avoid doing constructive work, often times exerting more effort to avoid work than the work itself involved. We tend to think of laziness as not wanting to work, but it's much more than that, laziness is a condition of the heart. Laziness is a form of rebellion against God and others and it's the outward expression of a cold heart that has more concern for self than for others. A heart that cares more about self than God, or the things of God. A heart that cannot bring itself to do anything for others let alone God. The Bible also has another name for laziness and its slothfulness. The definition includes being indolent, purposely inactive and apathetic and it's one of the most destructive sins a person can practice because it wastes the blessings of God.

We are all created in the image of God, with a unique blending of gifts and abilities given directly to us by the Lord Himself. Laziness takes all the talents, abilities and resources, which God has uniquely blessed us with and throws them away. Moreover, laziness ultimately comes down to one thing, that is rebellion against God, and placing one's emotions and desires above the things of God, and more importantly above a relationship with God. Lazy people want others to cater to their needs because they do not care enough to help those in need around them. And it's interesting to note that the Bible is just as hard on the lazy person, if not more so than the wicked. God's word, especially throughout the book of Proverbs speaks a lot about the lazy person. Another interesting note is that there is only condemnation for the lazy person throughout scripture. Because laziness is a condition that not only rebels against the Lord, but it also hurts others by its lack of action. Laziness puts a burden on those around them who have to compensate for the hateful apathy of the lazy person. And more importantly, it puts to waste all of the gifts, provisions and blessings of God.
