The Wicked Use Gossip and Slander to Create Strife – (Proverbs 26:20-22)

Daily Proverbs

Where there is no wood, the fire goes out; and where there is no talebearer, strife ceases. As charcoal is to burning coals, and wood to fire, So is a contentious man to kindle strife. The words of a talebearer are like tasty trifles, And they go down into the inmost body.

Daily Bible Study
The goal of the wicked is to bring destruction and what better way to do that than to first create chaos and strife. And that is the intentions behind the wicked who use gossip and slander to hurt others. Just like fire which needs fuel to burn in order to stay alive, so to the wicked use gossip and slander to keep strife active. Moreover the wicked use slander and gossip as fuel to create chaos and strife where none exists. And that's the message of these passages. The picture being painted here in these passages is intended to give us insight into the heart of the wicked. How they use their tongue to create chaos and strife.

And even more so, how they love slander and gossip. To the wicked their false words are like tasty treats. They thrive on them, they devour them in an effort to destroy others. They spend time and energy to create just the right recipe to bring the most destruction possible with their words. Like their father, Satan, who is the father of lies, they use their lies to hurt others and to lift themselves up. And oftentimes they will use just the smallest tidbit of truth to make their lies seem plausible. And the phrase, "they go down into the inmost body" was an idiom referring to the heart of the wicked. And it means that gossip and slander, not only feed the soul of the wicked, but they also stem from the heart of the wicked. Gossip and slander find their origin in the hearts of the wicked.
