Our Heart Reflects Our Character – (Proverbs 27:18-19)

Daily Bible Study
Our hearts reflect our true character. And in these passages God speaks to that point. Taking care of a fig tree properly so that it produces fruit, takes time, care and attention to detail. In addition, it takes patience to wait for the fruit to come into season. The same is true for a servant who faithfully serves his master while he is away. This too takes love for the master, loyalty and integrity on behalf of the servant. In other words, both scenarios speak of the character of one's heart and their love for God. And this type of character does not come from following the world, it comes from a life spent following the Lord. And it comes from time spent in the study of God's word, the Bible. Both of which help us to gain wisdom from God, wisdom which leads to a life well lived and a fruitful and abundant life serving the Lord. In the passages above, in both scenarios, the wise gardener and the wise servant will bring rewards to those who rely on them.
However, most importantly for our study, is the actions of the wise gardener and the wise servant, why? Because it reveals to us the true nature and character of their hearts. And that's the point of these passages! God is telling us what's really in our hearts is reflected in our actions. Our hearts toward others and toward God defines our character. And it's our character which dictates our actions, both in the presence of others and when we are alone with the Lord. Those who love the Lord, trust in Him, wait on Him and follow His precepts, will be rewarded when Christ returns. Moreover, by submitting to God and following the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we will have more joy and a more abundant life now as we serve the Lord and help those around us. In addition, when we study God's word we gain wisdom from God through the work of the Holy Spirit in us. A wisdom which in itself also produces a love within our hearts, which in turn has the natural byproduct of producing works pleasing to God.
