Don't Waste Resources on Something Which Destroys You – (Proverbs 23:19-21)

Daily Proverbs
Hear, my son, and be wise; and guide your heart in the way. Do not mix with winebibbers, or with gluttonous eaters of meat for the drunkard and the glutton will come to poverty, and drowsiness will clothe a man with rags.

In these passages from proverbs God is giving us practical wisdom. Like the wisdom passed down from a godly father to a son, God is giving us wisdom to live a better life with Him, through His power and for Him. This practical advice is for a productive and fruitful life. The father in these passages is reminding the son not only of the physical effects of intoxication and over-indulging, but also the practical cost and the damage it causes on a human life. Alcohol is one of those sins which thoroughly destroys the life of those infected by it.

The things mentioned in this passage not only affect one's ability to do work, but consume one's resources in order to purchase them. Pointing out the simple truth that purchasing something which in turn takes up your time, energy and negatively affects your body, making you less able to physically work, will in the end lead to your own poverty. Moreover the physical effects which destroy the lives of all those who try revolve their life around it. We as children of God have to remember the Lord loves us dearly and His desires for us are good. And that's why God has taken so much time in His word and through His Holy Spirit to give us guidance through life. Guidance meant to give us a rich, joyful life, which is productive for the kingdom of God.
