Daily Bible Study
This chapter of Proverbs is a collection of wisdom sayings from a man named Agur. Next to nothing is known about him, other than he was a "God Fearer." A God Fearer was a non-Jewish person who came to faith in the true and the living God of Israel. And as a result, they followed the Mosaic laws. Some have suggested that he was a court counselor to Solomon. However, despite this it's important to remember even the Old Testament saints like Agur we're saved by faith and not by the Mosaic law. They had faith in God and believed the Lord regarding His promises of the Messiah to come. The Messiah, who would redeem Israel and take away the sins of the world.

That Messiah, we know today is Christ Jesus our Lord. The laws of God, helped show man his need for a Savior. The Mosaic law was impossible to perfectly keep as God demanded. Therefore, it showed us our need for a Savior. It's thought that Ithiel and Ucal were students of Agur, because it was common for teachers of wisdom to have pupils which they passed on their godly knowledge. They did so in order to continue the legacy of godly leadership. Here the word "utterance" can be translated "burden" or "heavy-heart" because of a message God has given him. Moreover, it's important to remember all scripture is inspired by God. Therefore, even Augur was guided through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit as he wrote these passages.
