A man who flatters his neighbor Spreads a net for his feet. By transgression an evil man is snared, But the righteous sings and rejoices.

Here these two proverbs are joined together by their use of the metaphor of a net. A net used for ensnaring others. Even though they each stand on their own, together they give us another aspect of the heart of the wicked. The desire of the wicked to set a trap for others. The wicked in their hearts see others as prey, as victims meant for their capture in order to take what does not belong to them. They do not understand that these traps unnoticed by men are seen and recorded by God. God looks not just at our actions, but at the true intents and desires of our hearts. God looks at the motivation which drives us to do the things we do.

Our relationship with God will always be based on our trust in Jesus through faith and the love we have in our hearts for Him. Therefore the wicked are unable to understand this because they are at enmity against God. In wicked arrogance they use flattery to lure their unsuspecting prey in close for an attack. All the while they do so not understanding God is not mocked, and therefore build up wrath against themselves. Their lives consumed by plotting out their plans they do not see the joy of the righteous who have freedom in Christ and rejoice in the gifts of the Lord. Those who rebel against God and Christ fail to understand that every evil deed is added to the list of judgment for which they will have to give an account before God.
