Our Heart Determines the Character of Our Faith – (Proverbs 26:13-16)

Daily Proverbs

The lazy man says, "There is a lion in the road A fierce lion is in the streets" As a door turns on its hinges, So does the lazy man on his bed. The lazy man buries his hand in the bowl; It wearies him to bring it back to his mouth. The lazy man is wiser in his own eyes than seven men who can answer sensibly.

Daily Bible Study
In these passages the Bible is using exaggerated examples to show us the mindset behind the outrageous claims and excuses people use to justify their laziness. However, from the Bible's perspective laziness is another form of foolishness. The last verse in this set of passages shows us the true cause of laziness and foolishness towards God. A cause which is found in the hearts of people. Dear believer as humorous as these passages are, do not miss this important truth. When it comes to our faith and when it comes down to our obedience, it's a matter of the heart. It's a matter of where our hearts stand toward Christ Jesus our Lord. And a heart caught up in pride and self-absorption is a heart closed off to the saving knowledge of Christ.

Everything regarding our faith depends on where our heart is toward Jesus, toward God and toward His word, the Bible. Our relationship with God is a reflection of our heart attitude toward Jesus and whether or not He is truly the Lord of our life. Do we look at Jesus and say to Him, "my Lord and my God." Or is our faith, nothing more than an accessory, something we add on to help round out our lives. Is our religion nothing more than an activity we use to complete the public image or ourselves? Here we see the true motive of the foolish person, which is they are wise in their own eyes. Notice they are not wise in God's eyes and they are not wise in the eyes of others. Rather, they are wise in their own eyes, because of pride. And they are happy with their justification for laziness because their hearts are in rebellion against God.
