The Wicked Argue Because of Hate and Rebellion – (Proverbs 21:9)

Daily Proverbs

Better to dwell in a corner of a housetop, than in a house shared with a contentious woman.

Daily Bible Study
The homes of the ancient Israelites were constructed with flat roofs and often had a stairway leading up to the roof. Many times the roof of the home was used as a deck or a terrace. And on occasion people would build a temporary structure on the roof to house people or store household items. And that's the imagery used here in this passage. This verse paints the picture of a husband who has built himself a little shack on the roof of his house, just to get away from his contentious wife. In addition, we have to remember this verse is speaking about the relationship between husband and wife and this passage could apply to either spouse, to either the husband or a wife. Moreover, the true message of this passage is the condition of our hearts. What the Bible is talking about in this passage is the heart of the wicked spouse, the heart of a person who is in rebellion with God.

A person who does not know the Lord and has allowed the things of this world to become the major source of influence in their hearts. A quarrelsome person with a heart full of strife, bitterness and anger. And though the wife is pictured here, the passage can refer to either a wicked husband or wife. What the Bible is speaking of, is an attitude of anger, hostility and a heart always looking to find fault with others. The heart of a person who on purpose searches until they find something to complain about or criticize. The Bible shows us this in order to teach how wrong this behavior truly is. Moreover, all those who practice this are not only sinning against God, but they are also guaranteeing that the same spirit of critical judgment will be used against them when they stand before the Lord. We have to remember all those who have not accepted Jesus as their personal Lord and Savior, will face the judgement of God for every sin committed in thought or deed.
