God Has Given Us Our Conscience to Help Us Do Good – (Proverbs 20:27)

In the context of these passages the phrase, "spirit of man," refers to our conscience. That instinctive sense of right and wrong given to us by God. It's the early warning system God has built into each and every one of us and it produces guilt every time we violate God's laws of right and wrong. Dear child of God, we must understand our conscience is not the product of evolution, it's a gift and attribute given to us directly by the Lord. Why? Because all people are created in the image of God. This means all people have a body, a soul and a spirit as well as a conscience. When we continually sin and violate this God-given sense of right and wrong, we damage our ability to do good. This is because we can sear our conscience and destroy the early warning system God has provided us by our sin. And as we spend more time in rebellion against God, our conscience can become more and more desensitized to sin and we stray farther and farther from God. However, there is always hope for those who are lost, those who do not yet know Christ.
When we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior, something amazing happens. We are indwelt by the Holy Spirit, and our spirit which was dead in trespasses and sins is replaced by a new spirit which is alive to God and the things of God. The Holy Spirit then begins the work of sanctification in our lives. Sanctification includes restoring our conscience, thereby replacing our heart of stone with a heart of flesh, which in turn makes us more sensitive to the things of God. Through the process of sanctification, the Holy Spirit is preparing us for service to the Lord. Sanctification is the process of spiritual growth whereby God first brings about changes in our hearts and minds to hear and accept the Gospel message. Then after salvation, which brings our justification by the imputed righteousness of Christ, sanctification starts the process of our spiritual growth as God changes our hearts and our understanding. Through the work of the Holy Spirit, God in a sense brings our consciousness back to life after being spiritually dead. As this happens, we not only gain a better understanding of God's word in light of who Jesus is and what He has done for us, but we also become more sensitive to the things of God and His workings in our lives and the lives of others.
