Daily Proverbs

The rich rules over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender. He who sows iniquity will reap sorrow, and the rod of his anger will fail. He who has a generous eye will be blessed, for he gives of his bread to the poor.

These passages once again give us practical wisdom for everyday life. However, we should not pass over them too quickly. While they just "make sense" when we read them, we cannot forget God's principle of sowing and reaping. God is sovereign and His laws apply to us whether we believe in Him or not and this includes God's natural law of sowing and reaping. Sowing and reaping is one of the many ways God tries to get our attention, to help us stay on track and turn back toward Him. There is no such thing as Karma! There is no impersonal force seeing over the actions of people. There is no universal force which deals out good and bad luck depending on what we do! Rather, the law of sowing and reaping is just one more way our Lord and Savior shows us He is in control. If we rebel against God and sin, if we carry out actions because of greed, envy or other motives we sow seeds of sin which can grow and take a while to mature.

As a result, when our bad actions finally mature, they can cause terrible consequences for us including severe loss. And likewise when we help others and follow the Lord, our good actions can cause positive changes in others, which, when they mature can bring blessings into our lives. This is part of God's law of sowing and reaping. This means, we should not explain away the things of God to impersonal forces because of our rebellion and enmity with God. Instead, we should turn toward God and remember our Lord and Savior Christ Jesus. God is in control and He has set His laws over us, which include the law of sowing and reaping. In addition, we have to remember we live in a world at enmity against God. Therefore, our actions as children of God serve as a light of the Gospel to others, displaying in a very practical way the grace of God. And when Christians behave badly we impugned the name of Christ among those in rebellion against God and we can further turn people's hearts away from the Lord.
