Mankind is God's unique and special creation. We were created to worship and seek out God. In many ways you can say we were made with a God size hole in our hearts, that only the Lord can fill. This makes all people small and great, spiritual by nature. In other words, we have both a physical body and a spirit. And it's our spirit which seeks after God. However, in the fallen world we live in, because of our sin nature, and because of the spiritual warfare waged around us, that spiritual desire can get confused. It can become corrupted and misplaced. And this confusion can often result in people using the physical in order to satisfy or fill that spiritual void. It can become so extreme, it causes people to deny the spiritual all together. This, in turn, can lead us to make a religion out of our hobbies, out of sports or use extreme activities to satisfy the spiritual void which exists inside of each and every one of us.

And this is what Satan wants. He wants us to use the fulfillment of fleshly desires, and the satisfying of our egos as a replacement for this spiritual void in our lives. Why? Because it steers us away from Christ, and helps to secure an eternity of separation from God. Because of this corruption mankind develops false religions, or beliefs meant to fill the spiritual void, but cater to our physical desires. Religions designed to fill our sin nature and satisfy ego and pride. Even though over the long term those false religions never satisfy our need for God. Only Jesus can fill that spiritual void for us. Only Jesus can fill that God size hole we have and make us whole again. Through Jesus our spirit, which has been made new by God, can once again align with the physical under the guidance of the Holy Spirit who indwells every believer. And once that happens our hearts and our minds undergo a dramatic change as we are indwelt by the Holy Spirit and we desire God not works. We desire the Lord and not our flesh, we desire the salvation of souls over the feeding of our ego and pride.
