We Can Fill Our Homes With the Love of God – (Proverbs 15:16-17)

Daily Proverbs

Better is a little with the fear of the Lord, than great treasure with trouble. Better is a dinner of herbs where love is, than a fatted calf with hatred.

Daily Bible Study
The Bible has many things to say about love. However, not the way we tend to think of it. For us, love is something we do when it's good for us, or when we get loved in return, that's how the world tells us we should love others. However, the Bible tells us something different about love. God's word tells us that, "love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails." And this is the kind of love spoken about here in these passages. This is a love for God, a love for Christ Jesus our Lord and a love for those around us, regardless of what they can do for us. The phrase, "fear of the Lord" is a Jewish idiom, which means to have a relationship with God.

It means to have a deep down sense of love, honor, respect and awe of God, who is our sovereign Creator. The type of love spoke about here in these passages is a condition of our hearts that looks out for the best interest of others, ahead of ourselves. The true expression of love is how we feel toward others and what we do when everything and everyone hates us in return. And this ultimate expression of this type of love was given to us by Jesus on the Cross. Because of God's love for us, we have eternal life. This is the type of love spoken of by God in these passages, and this kind of love is only possible through the Holy Spirit who indwells us. This kind of love comes from knowing that when we were at enmity with God, He first loved us and sent His Son to die in our place, that we may spend eternity with Him. And these verses tell us it's far better than wealth to live in a household with this kind of love than any other. A love that can only come from God and a love that dwells only in those hearts given over to Christ Jesus our Lord.
