Like a hedge of thorns that is too difficult to get around, so too is the attitude of the lazy man. Those who rely on a lazy person receive nothing but pain and heartache, because relying on a lazy person is like sticking your hands in the midst of a thorn bush. Like thorns which prevent a garden from growing, so too is the heart of a lazy person. Their laziness will always prevent them from doing what they know needs to be done. Their laziness will destroy their life by preventing the lazy person from ever moving forward. Thereby bringing destruction to their life and the life of those who rely upon them. We can all be lazy from time to time and that's not what this verse is talking about. Rather, this passage is referring to a pattern of life, a chronic, lifelong habit, or pattern of behavior.

A person who chronically wastes the blessings of God. And that's really what's at the heart of laziness. It's rebellion against God, because of the lack of concern and appreciation for the gifts of God given to us. Gifts which are meant to be used to carry out the work of God in our lives. This passage is referring to the person who because of laziness and rebellion ignores the things of God and the responsibilities of life. However, the upright will do what is right because they see it as their duty to do so. And because of this the upright man will prosper in his ways. Those who are upright before the eyes of God, because of their relationship with Jesus will look out for the best interest and needs of those who rely upon them. Like a highway, which expedites travel, so too is the life of the upright person.  They help those around them and make life easier for those who trust in them. The upright person, leads a life which benefits those who come into contact with them, and because of their commitment to Christ Jesus, they do good for those around them.
