A Wise Servant Becomes a Son in the Lord – (Proverbs 17:2)

The word used here for "wisdom" refers to a wisdom gained from a love for the Lord, loyalty to a master, along with a deep down love and desire to learn and grow in the knowledge of God's word. It speaks of a wisdom gained from the study of God's word and the observation of right and wrong and of sowing and reaping what is good and honest. In other words it speaks of a wisdom that can only come from following the Lord, a wisdom which comes from God and leads to life. And not only life, but a more abundant life of joy, love, humility and respect. This type of wisdom is contrasted against the foolish son. A foolish son who disregards the teaching of parents, dishonors family, a son who disregards what is right and honorable and chases after what is against God and harmful to self and others. A son who rebels against the Lord and disregards what is right, one who lives at enmity with God and therefore brings shame to his family. We have to keep in mind that while this passage mentions a son, it can refer to any child, son or daughter. And it's meant as a reference to any child who strays from God.
A child who is rebellious, speaks poorly of parents and ridicules what is good and honest. A child who is wise in their own eyes and blinded to the destruction which lies ahead of them. Why? Because all they can see is their own wants, desires and emotions. Moreover, because they are allowing themselves to be influenced by the one the Apostle Paul calls the, "prince of the power of the air," who is Satan, and blinded by a fallen world, which is at enmity with God. A child who has placed self, above all else and rejoices in the destruction of others. This type of child is destined for hardship and prepared for ruin. They will be counted as lost and a constant heartache to parents. Whereas the wise servant who fears the Lord and brings honor to those he serves, will not only become part of the family, but become like a son to those they serve. And in the end they will receive a portion of the inheritance because they have received adoption into the family whom they serve. Dear child of God, we must remember we too receive the same things by following Christ. Through our faith in Jesus, we not only receive salvation, but also we gain adoption into the family of God as sons and daughters, receiving an inheritance in the kingdom of God.
