Our Speech Reflects the Heart of God's People – (Proverbs 18:20-21)

Daily Proverbs

A man's stomach shall be satisfied from the fruit of his mouth, from the produce of his lips he shall be filled. Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.

Daily Bible Study
In our society today, both the greatest good and the greatest harm can stem from the power of the tongue. With our speech, we can build up those around us or tear them down. And that's the message of these verses today. Dear child of God, we have to remember what's in our heart is displayed by our speech. How we use our words displays for all the world to see the true nature of our hearts. More importantly, the words we use do not hide the true intentions and desires of our hearts. And that's where God looks! God looks not just at our actions and the things we say, but He also looks at the true desires and motivations, behind what we do and say. The Biblical truth of these passages is what we say and how we say it, is often times a true reflection of what's in our hearts.

Therefore, we need to ask ourselves do we truly love the Lord? Is Jesus truly the central focus of our lives? Is Jesus, God's word and the Holy Spirit truly the source from which we draw our sustenance? If this is true for the Christian then it means the consequences of our speech should produce godly satisfaction and fulfillment, which furthers the cause of Christ in our day to day world. How we use our speech to influence those around us should reflect Jesus and His position in our lives. This means our speech should reflect first and foremost love and concern for the well being and benefit of others and not ourselves. Our speech should reflect that we put God and others first, before our own selfish concerns and desires. If we understand this, then we truly understand the message of these passages.
