Wisdom for a Good Life – (Proverbs 19:17-20)

Daily Proverbs

He who has pity on the poor lends to the Lord, and He will pay back what he has given. Chasten your son while there is hope, and do not set your heart on his destruction. A man of great wrath will suffer punishment; for if you rescue him, you will have to do it again. Listen to counsel and receive instruction, that you may be wise in your latter days.

Daily Bible Study
Here in these passages, we see that God's word lays out some basic, yet essential attitudes or behaviors for a good life. All these speak of a heart toward God along with a humble spirit. These essential Biblical principles include kindness and charity to the poor. As well as the need for parents to be involved in your children's lives and not to avoid proper discipline. We only have a certain time to train our children and influence their lives before they grow into an independent person. Therefore, we are to model godly character showing the love of Jesus to our children, our spouses and our family. And we are to show the love of Christ to those around us in need. In other words, our Christianity should be known by our love and treatment toward others, toward our children and our spouses, rather than by what we tell people. In addition, we are to choose our friends wisely and avoid those who lack self-control. Those who lack self-control will constantly create problems for themselves.

Those who lack self-control will rely on others to free them from the entanglement of the snares, they are insistent to step in. We must remember that our friends do shape our character. Many times we think we can change people, however, that's usually not the case. More often than not, in the end, we ourselves can become desensitized by the bad behavior of others. Therefore, we must remember, only the Gospel of Christ, which brings with it the indwelling Holy Spirit and the power of God, has the ability to change peoples lives. Without Jesus, what more commonly happens is that associating with bad people causes good people to backslide and not the other way around. That is why it's so important that we, within our own hearts, acknowledge the sovereignty and rule of God in our lives. We must always remember, God's wisdom revealed to us in the Bible, not only speaks of changes to the hearts of those who follow Jesus, but it also gives us practical wisdom for everyday life. Wisdom which leads to joy, peace, community and a more abundant life for the Lord. Which is only possible through the Holy Spirit who strengthens and guides us.
