A love for Christ and the things of God, and a character of steadfast faith are the hallmarks of godly leadership. These are virtues that come from God and they are the result of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit who carries out God's work of sanctification in our lives. Sanctification is a process of spiritual growth, brought about in us by God, and occurs in us as a result of our faith in Jesus. And with all true leadership, it's a work of God as well as a God given ability. It's the power of God, who raises up godly leaders and gives them a heart for those they lead. God gives them a heart of wisdom, mercy, grace, discernment and love which seeks the good of others ahead of self. In other words, true leadership, godly leadership looks out for the good of those they lead and it looks toward the spiritual development of those they lead and not for their own social benefit, status or material gain. Why is this important? This is important because the world is moving forward to the culmination of God's plan of redemption in Christ Jesus. And the culmination of God's plan of redemption is to place all of creation under the lordship of Jesus, to the glory of God the Father.

Therefore, all godly leaders have their foundation in Christ Jesus our Lord, and serve to honor God the Father, through their faith in Jesus. In addition, true leadership also relies on the word of God and the indwelling of the Holy Spirt for strength. The Holy Spirit and God's word help to shape our character and mold our outward behavior for all to see. This happens as we are changed from the inside out, by God's process of sanctification. With our salvation, our spirit which was dead in trespasses and sins, was made anew. It was made alive to God and the things of God. And it's through the Holy Spirit's work of sanctification that God works with our new spirit, bringing changes to our hearts and minds, that were once dead because of our trespasses and sins. It's through this process of spiritual growth carried out by God, that we become a new creation in Christ Jesus our Lord. Moreover, God's word also forms the subject of our inward thoughts as we study the Bible. And because of this supernatural love developed in us, which includes a love for others, a love for the truth, a love for the Lord and for His word, the Bible. God is able to sustain leaders through times of difficulty, as they trust in the Lord and remain steadfast in their faith. These qualities are so important because they create the foundation of leadership from which to govern others wisely in the fear of the Lord.
