Daily Proverbs

A false witness shall perish, but the man who hears him will speak endlessly.

Daily Bible Study
This passage is a warning to the righteous about the behavior of the wicked. A false witness lies on purpose, they would like us to believe their gossip and lies are accidental or the product of a misunderstanding; however the truth is their actions are deliberate. Their goal is to spread destruction by word of mouth to achieve their wicked desires. Because with their actions they hope to accomplish their goal, which is to pervert justice for others, accumulate gain for themselves, and receive recognition without having to put in the time, effort or work to accomplish it God's way. In addition, they hope to achieve destruction in the lives of those who are the target of their gossip. And that's the message conveyed in this passage. Even though God will deal with the false witness, their gossip can affect peoples lives today.

And in the end all those who are in rebellion against God will perish. However, for us today, the effects of gossip can continue for long periods of time because it will be repeated over and over again by others. Because of our sin nature, people love to gossip and spread stories. The wicked person is well aware of this, and as a matter of fact they rely on this part of our sin nature in order to accomplish their wicked goals. Without the sin nature of others, their efforts would be fruitless. Therefore, the Lord here and elsewhere in His word gives us practical advice for everyday life. And in this case that advice is to be careful in our dealings with others and the information we share. We are to be on the lookout for those times the wicked spread gossip, and we are not to let our sin nature get the better of us. Rather, we are to stop ourselves from spreading gossip about others.
