During Bible times, names had significance and meaning. Your name was a sign of your character and your behavior. Moreover, we see in the Bible where God names people not as they are, but as what they will become through the work of the Holy Spirit as He changes their lives. Therefore, we are to cherish a good name above all worldly things, and moreover, we should be concerned with what name God calls us. If we know Christ, God calls us His children. If we do not know Jesus, God tells us we are separated from Him because we are at enmity with God and we are guilty of our own sin. This is why it's critical we understand how important it is that God calls us His children through our faith in Jesus. But do we really know what that means for us? Dear believer as a child of God, we are now known by the name Christian! This means we are followers and disciples of Christ Jesus our Lord. This means we have accepted Jesus as our Lord, Savior and Master.
One of the words the Bible uses for a Christian is "doulos" which means bondservant or slave. A doulos was a slave who, when set free, decided because of their love for their master and the care he had given them, they voluntarily gave their lives to their master. This description was meant as a picture of our faith and our relationship to Christ Jesus our Lord. So what does this mean for us? What this means if we truly love Christ and love God through our faith in Jesus, then we do not walk away from our Lord after receiving salvation. It means we dedicate ourselves to Him, His calling and His work in our lives through the Holy Spirit. Now that we have accepted His grace and salvation, we must ask ourselves, have we accepted His Lordship and His control over our lives? If we have not and we have no desire or love for Jesus, but claim the name of Christian. Then we need to look seriously at our commitment to Jesus and call into question if we truly accept Him as our Lord and Savior, believing He is who He claimed to be, which is the incarnate God of Heaven.
