Use Our Words to Build, Not to Destroy – (Proverbs 25:23, 25)

Daily Proverbs

The north wind brings forth rain, And a backbiting tongue an angry countenance. As cold water to a weary soul, So is good news from a far country.

Daily Bible Study
Here the Bible is giving us practical advice in cause and effect when it comes to human behavior. These two verses are paired together and emphasize the consequences of our actions. God is speaking about our attitude toward others and how we go about trying to edify and lift each other up with our words. The north wind was not the usual source of rain for Israel. And when it came it was not only unexpected, but it was also damaging. And in the same manner slander when it comes is often unexpected and slander is always intended to do damage to others by its maker.

This is compared to good news when it comes unexpectedly. In this passage the phrase "far country" brings with it the idea that it was unexpected news. And unexpected good news or kindness always refreshes the soul. Dear believer, we must take this advice from God to heart. We must learn to use our tongues not for destruction, but rather for building up others. Not for tearing others down, but to build up and strengthen others in their walk with God and in their daily lives. Our time in this world before we step into eternity is brief. And in the end the only thing that will matter is our relationship with Jesus. And our love for Jesus, that determines how we treat those around us and what we do with the blessings God has given us.
