Fools Destroy Themselves to Varying Degrees – (Proverbs 26:11-12)

Fools Destroy Themselves to Varying Degrees – (Proverbs 26:11-12)

Daily Proverbs

As a dog returns to his own vomit, So a fool repeats his folly. Do you see a man wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him.

Daily Bible Study
Peter quoted this verse in his second letter to the church and it refers to the behavior of a fool. Someone who returns back to what made him so sick in the first place. This is a very graphic way of saying fools do not learn, even from their most horrendous mistakes. Even though what they're doing is destroying them, the fool continues to return and repeat the same foolishness over and over again. However, in the second verse we encounter an interesting statement. The Bible point's out another person who is worse off than the fool. This is the self-conceited fool. They are the most stupid and therefore the most difficult to reach. Interestingly in this verse we see there are varying degrees of foolishness with the worst being the fool who sees himself as wise in his own eyes.

Such a person is beyond the reach of man, only God can deal with such a lost person. And only the Holy Spirit can turn such a person into a child of God. And as we read these passages we must learn to equate foolishness with a heart hardened to the Lord. So really what these passages our telling us is that we can harden our hearts to varying degrees toward God. The Bible tells us that all people are spiritually dead toward God. That all people are "dead in their trespasses and sins." This is God's way of telling us that our hearts are spiritually dead toward Him, and some more than others. Therefore God calls us to Himself. God calls each and every one of us individually. This means the Holy Spirit works individually with each and every person to quicken and restore our dead heart of stone into a heart of flesh. Into a heart sensitive enough to hear the call of God and to understand the Gospel message and come to faith in Christ Jesus our Lord.
