Daily Proverbs

Do not boast about tomorrow, For you do not know what a day may bring forth. Let another man praise you, and not your own mouth; A stranger, and not your own lips.

Daily Bible Study
Wise people will not boast about tomorrow because they do not know what the future holds, no one does, only God knows what the future holds. The Lord our God is sovereign and He alone controls the rise and fall of nations as well as the individual. And that's the message brought forth in these passages. Moreover, this is especially true for Christians since we are to be lead and directed by Christ through the Holy Spirit. It doesn't mean we cannot plan for tomorrow, but it does mean not to give all of our worries, time, attention and love into planning tomorrow. It means we are not to rely on ourselves and exclude the work or guidance of the Holy Spirit in our lives.

Nor are we to boast about what we will do tomorrow, but instead we are to follow the Lord. As children of God through Christ, we are to follow the guidance of the Holy Spirit who indwells every believer. And while it's wise and prudent to plan for tomorrow. God's word and Jesus Himself makes a distinction between planning and boasting about tomorrow and what it will bring. We must remain open to God's guidance and be ready to change our plans if the sovereign God of the universe decides another direction for our lives. In addition, the plans we do have should have as their bases the word of God and the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. We have to remember God can't use us if we have already set our course for the future. Which means we can prepare, but we need to be ready to change at the moment of God's notice. We need to be ready first and foremost to follow the Holy Spirit's guidance as He directs our lives.
