We Turn Away from God to Our Own Destruction – (Proverbs 28:9-10)

Daily Proverbs

One who turns away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer is an abomination. Whoever causes the upright to go astray in an evil way, he himself will fall into his own pit; but the blameless will inherit good.

These two verses speak of turning away from God, turning away from His word, His precepts and His laws and instead turning to the way of the world which is sin. These verses speak about the attitude of our hearts toward God. Do we turn to God and seek a relationship with Him, or do we turn away and chase after a dark and dying world. God wants only good for our lives, and even more He wants us to spend eternity with Him in heaven. Moreover, God Himself stepped out of eternity and took on humanity in the incarnation. Jesus did this in order that He could be our propitiation for sin. Jesus Christ the very God of Heaven did this for us that through Him we can have eternal life! And not just eternal life to come, but a more joyous life now empowered by the Holy Spirit who indwells all followers of Christ.

However, when we turn from God toward evil we condemn ourselves to Hell because it is not God's will that any should perish. And God will not violate the free will He has given us to choose Christ or rebel against God. All people have sinned and all people fall short of the glory of God. And what God desires is love and relationship. God Himself provided a way for us to restore our relationship with Him. And it's God's desire that we turn to Him and not this world. Therefore, to turn away from God and chase after sin is a denial of the very God who gave us our existence. Even worse, when we persuade others to sin, we build up additional wrath for ourselves not realizing there will be different degrees of punishment in Hell. Depending on the zeal of our rebellion, in other words the quantity and severity we take in our rebellion against Christ Jesus our Lord, will in turn determine the degree of the wrath we face during the time of God's judgment.
