The Bible often speaks of the "fear of the Lord," a common idiom used to represent a person with a heart of deep love toward God. A heart filled with respect, reverence and awe toward God and His promised Messiah, Christ Jesus our Lord. In other words a person who loves God, presenting themselves in humility and brokenness before the Lord. And it's this type of attitude that's spoken of in these passages. Moreover, this type of attitude is only possible today through a heart in relationship with Christ Jesus our Lord. A heart which has placed its trust in God and the grace Jesus alone can provide. These passages present to us a solid Biblical truth. A person with a heart toward God will prosper in the things of God and live a rewarding life.
A person who confesses their sins to the Lord in humility and repentance is a person who will prosper and know happiness. By prospering the Bible is not speaking of material possessions, but of a good life. A life of joy, honesty and humility. A life with purpose and meaning. Moreover, a person whom God will sustain through trials. The Hebrew word used for "prosper" is 'tsalach." This means to push ahead, to move passed obstacles and trials. To succeed despite the problems faced. Which is accomplished through the power of the Holy Spirit, who builds in us perseverance, as we remain steadfast through trials. And that's the point made by these passages! God's truly looking for a person after His own heart, a person in love with Him and His word. He's not seeking religious people, nor those who are proud of heart, nor those seeking worldly success. But rather a person with a heart toward God. Someone who truly loves the Lord, rejoicing in obedience to His word.
