Bribery and Flattery Are Not Ok in God's Eyes – (Proverbs 28:21, 23)

Daily Proverbs

To show partiality is not good, Because for a piece of bread a man will transgress. He who rebukes a man will find more favor afterward Than he who flatters with the tongue.

Daily Bible Study
These verses, though it may be not apparent at first, speak so much about our world today. They illustrate the ways the wicked use to get ahead in life. These verses help to reveal the condition of our hearts and how the attitudes of our heart determine our character. They speak to the integrity of a person and their fellowship with the Lord. The first passage speaks about bribery. Giving favor to an individual for something in return. In our day and age this would be showing kindness or gifts given to those with influence or authority, solely with the expectation of receiving favoritism in return. This also includes giving a gift such as money in order to get a job, a favor or a material item back in return.

The second passage talks about using flattery as a means to find favor with those in authority. In addition, it also includes looking the other way when sin occurs. Ignoring when someone is doing wrong because of a relationship, or because that person provides a material or social benefit. In other words caring more about ourselves than others, and doing so to receive reward regardless of the cost others have to pay. God's word tells us that all of these behaviors, while common in the world are still sin in God's eyes. Therefore, they cause us to fall out of fellowship with God and ultimately lead to God's judgment on us and our lives. Our actions can open up God's discipline toward us, greatly affecting us and our families.
