God Judges Individuals and Nations Who Abandon Him – (Proverbs 30:11-14)

Daily Proverbs

There is a generation that curses its father, and does not bless its mother. There is a generation that is pure in its own eyes, yet is not washed from its filthiness. There is a generation-oh, how lofty are their eyes and their eyelids are lifted up. There is a generation whose teeth are like swords, and whose fangs are like knives, to devour the poor from off the earth, and the needy from among men.

Daily Bible Study
"There is a generation" can be translated also as "there are those who." In addition, these sins listed above can not only destroy an individual, but they can also destroy an entire generation of people who practice them. Agur goes on to describe a self-righteous and prideful generation that hates parents, abandons traditions and destroys all that is placed in their hands because of greed and pride. They are described as being like wild animals devouring prey. This is a generation who is righteous in its own eyes.

Interesting enough, this was also the state of both the northern kingdom of Israel and later the southern kingdom of Judah before God sent them both into captivity. The northern kingdom was so bad they never returned, but the southern kingdom did return. Moreover, we have to understand that God will not hold an individual or a nation blameless who behave this way. When speaking of the nations the Lord will often first warn a nation with natural disasters which are followed by attacks from their enemies. And if those warnings fail, God will then bring greater judgments. And He will continue to do so until that nation repents and turns back toward Him, or is no longer part of the family of nations.
