This can be one of the hardest Bible verses for us to understand as we live in this fallen world. We see evil and those who commit evil flourish all around us and the wicked seem to prosper at every turn. However, this will not be the end of things. Dear believer, we must remember Jesus' words, "In this world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world." Sin and wickedness happen because of the fallen world we live in, which promotes the sin nature of those who do not know Christ. Satan and this fallen world are at enmity with God, and they work together with our sin nature to promote rebellion against God. And we must never forget, that together they hate God's word, hate Jesus and hate those who follow Christ.
As the Apostle Paul tells us in his letter to the Ephesians wickedness happens "according to the course of this world, according to the 'prince of the power of the air,'" who is Satan. And it's his influence which now works in the "sons of disobedience." This "prince of the power of the air" is Satan, and while he is active now, in the end God reigns supreme. And Satan, his demons and all those who follow him and reject Christ will be cast into the Lake of Fire. As we read in the book of Revelation, "anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the Lake of Fire." Therefore, we are to be of good cheer, because God is in control, and the reign of Satan and wickedness is drawing to a close, and soon return, and reign of Christ is nearer than we may realize.
