Let Our Hearts Retain the Word of God – (Proverbs 4:3-4)

In this section of scripture Solomon is reflecting on his parents and on the teachings of the Lord. We are to honor our parents and we are to give extra thanks to the Lord if we had godly parents. In addition, we are to retain the words of the Lord, because they not only bring wisdom, discernment and guidance, but they also provide for a long, fruitful and healthy life. Godly wisdom is not just to give us a better, more fulfilling life now; but also a more abundant life for ourselves, those around us and the kingdom of God. Imagine if you will what our lives would be like, if from a young age, we kept and lived by the words of the Lord? What would our lives be like today, if we sought the Lord?
How much would our lives change if we sought out His wisdom and not the desires of the world we live in? If we sought kindness and not our own recognition? If we sought after the welfare of others and not our own personal gain and glorification? Just imagine, how much more joy, purpose and fulfillment, we would have now, living a life pleasing to God and honoring to the Lord! Therefore, it's important for us to remember, through Jesus, we not only become children of God and joint-heirs with Him in God's kingdom. But we are also indwelt by the Holy Spirit. And it's the work of the Holy Spirit who changes our hearts and our lives from the inside out. Moreover, it's through the work of the Holy Spirit in us, whereby God can make us useful for His kingdom, and redeem back those years we lost, living as the world lives.
