Do Not Walk in the Way of the Wicked – (Proverbs 4:14-18)

These two verses come together to speak about the need for godly leadership. To bring peace and stability leaders must root out and deal with wickedness appropriately as soon as it's discovered, they are not to let it fester and grow. Those in leadership, are not to knowingly allow evil to flourish under their command. If they ignore evil and leave it alone, it will thrive and grow until it destroys people's lives and brings down the entire company. The same can be said for families, churches and nations. And that's the message God is conveying here in these passages. The imagery invoked here with the threshing wheel is that of separating the wheat from the chaff, or in our case separating the bad, the worthless and the wicked from the good, the wholesome and the nourishing. Using the analogy of the grain harvest, once the chaff was separated from the grain, being worthless, it was gathered together and burned in the fires.
So to God sifts the hearts of all people, especially those in leadership roles. We have to remember God is not like man, God is not waiting to hear our excuses, God's not going to listen to our well thought out justifications for allowing evil to flourish. Rather, God searches the hearts and minds of all men and women, looking not only at our actions, but the true emotions, desires and motivations behind those actions. Therefore, God calls all kings and rulers to follow His guidance, carry out justice, help the poor, the weak and the helpless. Leaders are called to show the same type of steadfast love and faithfulness to their people that God has shown to us. Leaders are to be looking out for the welfare and good of the people and society as a whole, they are to lead placing the needs of the kingdom and the people ahead of their own personal desires and wants. And dear child of God, we too, as followers of Jesus are called to do the same. We are called by God to put the best interest and welfare of others ahead of our own personal wants and desires.
