Daily Proverbs

When pride comes, then comes shame; but with the humble is wisdom.

Throughout the proverbs and the Bible, we see pride and humility contrasted against each other over and over again. And this proverb does that as well because pride is one of the most destructive sins a person can suffer from. The word used here for pride has the meaning of "boiling over" or to "boil up to the surface." And this is painting a picture for us that is all too common in our world today. That is an attitude of overwhelming arrogance and insolence in behavior caused by pride. An arrogance that says we can do what we want, how we want and when we want without concern for anyone else but ourselves. Pride that causes arrogance and breeds hypocrisy as we complain about disrespect when we ourselves respect nothing, not ourselves, not each other and not even God. We see this today as we are led into destruction by this dark world.

The Apostle Paul calls Satan, "the prince of the power of the air" because of his influence over the philosophies, ideologies and social movements of the world. Pride was the sin that caused Satan's destruction and the same sin is prevalent in the world today. The world will do all it can to convince us that pride is good, that happiness is really all about self. We teach children that it's all about making ourselves known and showing our pride. The Bible makes it clear this is not God's way; but man's way. Pride springs forth from a sin nature in rebellion against God. Pride does not come from God. This is contrasted with God's way which is humility and a humble spirit that walks with God. In addition the word used for "humble" also refers to a teachable spirit, or a spirit of humility and love that is open to the instruction of the Holy Spirit. A prideful heart is not teachable, its own arrogance closes the heart's ability to understand and learn the wisdom of God.
