Leaders Stay Alert and Sober – (Proverbs 31:4-5)

Daily Proverbs

It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine, nor for princes intoxicating drink; lest they drink and forget the law, and pervert the justice of all the afflicted.

Daily Bible Study
The Bible speaks time and again about drunkenness and its close relationship with other sins. Therefore, those who lead others or make decisions which affects the lives of others are not to consume strong drink. Intoxication leads to poor judgment, loss of moral conviction, perversion of the heart as well as dulling the senses and loss of inhibition. As we read through the Old Testament we see time and again the damage done by alcohol and its effects on those who consume it.

We have to remember strong drink was one of the contributing factors in the idolatry and murder which defined Canaanite religious practices. Participants would first become intoxicated, then perform the immoral acts of religious ceremonies or child sacrifices. In our world today we see how alcohol damages people's lives, causes the loss of life for many and ruins entire communities. In society today we see the strong connection between our sin nature and intoxication and how that is celebrated by this fallen world we live in.
