God's word has a lot to say regarding family life and these verses are no exception. These passages and others like them are so important to us because the family unit is the key building block of society. Without strong families you cannot have a strong society. Therefore, Satan and this fallen world understand if they can destroy the family, they will not only destroy society, but make it far less likely that someone will accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior. These passages speak of the abusive child, the arrogant child, the one who will not listen to parents and is determined to run headlong into destruction. These passages speak about the heartache, shame and chaos, children who have gone astray can bring to a family. In many cultures, both then and today, the behavior of children is a reflection on the parents, as well as the entire family. Children who are in rebellion against God and parents can bring chaos to a family while destroying their own lives in the process. Children who cease to listen to the instruction of godly parents enter a road filled with difficulty, frustration and destruction. Moreover, the destruction of the family and the relationship between a parent and child is the root cause behind many issues today.
Because we are children of God and followers of Jesus, we are to love our families, putting their social, physical, mental and spiritual well being ahead of our own comfort and desires. Moreover, we are doing so while modeling humility, kindness and especially grace to those around us. Because of the love we have for Jesus, what He has done for us and the changes the work of the Holy Spirit has brought about in our lives, we are to show love, mercy, compassion and grace to our family and others. While also modeling with the way we live our lives, godly responsibility. Through our actions, we are to model how to treat others, model the behavior of Jesus to our children, as we help our families grow in the knowledge of Christ, who He is and what He has done for us. We do so through fellowship and the study of God's word. The key is humility, honesty and transparency before God and our families. We are called to walk not as the world walks, but as God has instructed us to walk. We are called to not focus on the world, but submit to the guidance of the Holy Spirit. In addition, the Bible also warns us, those children who cease to seek God's wisdom and guidance through His word, will stray from the knowledge and wisdom of the Lord and as a result bring heartache to their own lives.
