Here in these passages God's word speaks to us again regarding personality traits or habits that lead to life, as well as those which bring about destruction. In almost a rhetorical tone, God's word speaks of how a lazy person cannot even bring their hands out of the food bowl to feed themselves, thereby causing their own starvation. Laziness is one of the most destructive traits a person can have, because it creates a condition whereby a person does not care enough to attempt change or growth. Laziness is one of the most destructive of sins, because it causes us to waste the blessings and talents God has given us. Laziness or slothfulness as the Bible calls it, is often rebuked throughout the book of Proverbs and the Bible in general, why is that? Because of the damage it can cause to a person's life. The sin of laziness is so pervasive, that it affects every aspect of the lives of those who practice it. Laziness can destroy the mind, the spirit and the body.
Laziness can cause us to lose out on everything in life, because it destroys the potential we have in life. Laziness can also cause us to lose out on the blessings God has planned for us, because it causes us to ignore the doors God has opened for us and it can cause us to ignore the promptings of the Holy Spirit, thereby diminishing the spiritual growth God had planned for us. And it's interesting to note, that laziness is the one trait which is most often rebuked by God and a fallen world alike. God can rebuke and discipline a person who sins, God can encourage a person who follows the Lord, but what can you do with a person who won't even try? What can you do with a person who refuses to get out of bed? That's the attitude conveyed in this psalm. The lazy person more than any other, completely wastes the blessings and gifts of God! And through their laziness, a lazy person can not only destroy themselves, but also their families and those who are foolish enough to depend on them. Laziness is the one sin, which makes a person completely useless in all aspects of God's kingdom work.
