An evil man seeks only rebellion; therefore a cruel messenger will be sent against him. Whoever rewards evil for good, evil will not depart from his house.

These verses speak to us about the spiritual law of sowing and reaping. This is one of God's many laws, and one of the many attributes of God's laws is that the consequences of rebellion are sown into every sin. In other words, regardless of any judgments we may receive, sin carries its own consequences that can destroy our lives and the lives of those close to us. We have seen these scenarios play out time and again within the pages of the Old Testament scripture. However, has is always true with God's word, it also goes much deeper than we may notice at first glance. First, God will not be mocked and those who are wicked and those who are evil, and those who are found without Christ will face God's just wrath, in the judgment to come. Which in the end means their destruction and eternal separation from God. Second, we must never forget, sin is never satisfied! Sin is never full, it always wants more, and sin never comes alone, it's always accompanied by destruction.

This means that sin will never stop until it has destroyed everything in our lives. This means, as we sow to sin more of it enters our lives and the greater the degree of destruction. This cycle will continue until we are consumed by it and sin has destroyed our lives and separated is far from God. This means that when people engage in wickedness, or participate in evil, it brings with it more evil, more wickedness, which in turn leads to more sin. As this process progresses, our hearts harden against God and against the things which are good and wholesome. Moreover, humanity in our fallen state at enmity against God, cannot break this cycle on our own, it requires God's intervention. It requires the Holy Spirit to come into our lives and change our hearts, thereby giving us the ability to understand and accept the free offer of grace. A gift given to us by God's mercy, a gift that only Jesus can provide. A gift Jesus gives freely to all people who come to Him by faith alone and accept Him as their Lord and Savior. Jesus is the only one who can reverse the process of hardening, a process which is constantly in motion, constantly at work within the hearts of those lost in a fallen world at enmity with God.
