Fools Speak to Their Own Destruction – (Proverbs 14:3)
Daily Proverbs
Daily Bible Study
God is speaking in these verses of a foolish, proud tongue and the dangers that foolish speech can bring on a person, and the havoc it can cause. The words of the wicked are often times meant for one purpose, which is to destroy others. Therefore, the words out of the mouth of the foolish person can often form a rod, which in turn is used by their enemies to inflict harm back on themselves. The foolish person will often mock to cover up the hatred and rebellion in their hearts. They do so to hide from others their true motives of destruction. The Bible also tells us as we move closer and closer to the end-times the number of foolish mockers will increase. And as we approach the end of the church age people will become lovers of self, proud, boastful, arrogant and deceived.
This passage also shows us that the fool does not care, nor has the common sense enough to think ahead as to the consequences of their speech. Because their words are meant to destroy regardless of collateral damage, their thoughts never go past seizing the opportunity to speak and cause destruction. This is unlike the wise person, who knows when to speak and when not to speak. The wise have as their goal the building up of others, the harmony among believers and the glorifying of God. They speak using wisdom gained from the study of God's word and the influence of the Holy Spirit. Dear child of God, this is important for us to remember. When anger and rebellion take over the heart, they can cause a person to seize any opportunity to spew forth hatred and condemnation in their speech. Therefore, it becomes all the more important that we not only follow the guidance of the Holy Spirit who indwells us, but that we also pray for the wisdom and heart to always seek the good of others the glorifying of God through Christ Jesus our Lord.
