Daily Bible Study
This verse and the next two, really give us a complete picture of the heart of sin and therefore the heart of the wicked. Wicked people are those who are driven by sin, those who are at enmity against God and have resisted all attempts of the Holy Spirit to change their hearts. In other words, sin and rebellion against God is the driving force or purpose behind their actions. Sin is what motivates their heart. This type of person doesn't just want the destruction of others, they enjoy watching others being destroyed, they seek it out like a hunter tracking their prey. Their desire is not only for self-gain and self-satisfaction, but also for the destruction of others. Dear child of God, we have to understand evil people seek out and desire the destruction of the godly and all that is good.

In ancient times hunters would dig a pit and then cover it up and place enticing bait over the top of it. Their hope was an unsuspecting animal would fall into the pit in their efforts to get to the bait. Often times the pit would be lined with wooden spikes meant to disable or kill the prey as it fell on top of the spikes. This would make killing the animal easier and reduce the effort required to hunt down their prey. That's the picture God has painted here in these passages. This passage shows us just one of the attributes, of the character of the wicked. It gives us a glimpse into the nature of the sin desire, which drives them. Like hunters, they actively seek out innocent people, baiting traps, hoping for the next person to fall. They hope by trapping their prey, it will be easier for them to attack and destroy. Therefore, we must keep guard by walking humbly before the Lord in faith, in prayer and always seeking, with all humility, the guidance of the Holy Spirit who indwells us.
