God’s Word is a Wellspring of Life to Our Souls – (Proverbs 16:22-23)

In every part of the world water is a necessity for life. And practically speaking, those who possess water, possess life. This is also true for God's word, which not only provides wisdom for us to live a more abundant life, but also leads to life, because it leads us to Jesus. God's word helps us to live a life pleasing to the Lord and productive for His kingdom. The understanding spoken of in these passages is a reference to the learning and studying of God's word, the Bible. The Bible is God's special revelation to mankind about Himself and His plan of redemption for humanity. In God's word there is the wisdom and understanding which leads to eternal life. Those who possess this understanding, have access to the fountain of life to constantly renew their soul.

That fountain is Christ Jesus our Lord, and the wellspring spoken of here is symbolic for the salvation He alone can provide us. In addition, Jesus provides an abundant life for us now, for those who have placed their faith in Him and follow Him alone. When we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior, we are indwelt by the Holy Spirit who begins to change our lives. One of those changes includes what theologians call the "illumination of scripture." In other words, as we study the Bible the Holy Spirit, who is God Himself, gives us a better understanding of God's word in light of who Jesus us and what He has done for us, thereby bringing God's wisdom into our hearts and minds. This process brings God's word from our Bible study into our hearts, where we can use it in our day to day lives. This helps us to live a life pleasing to God, helpful to those around us and profitable for the eternal reward we have because of our faith in Jesus.
